Preschoolers are enrolled in George Walton Academy at age four.
The maximum enrollment in our K4 program is sixteen students per
class. K5 enrollment is twenty students per class. Each teacher
is assisted in her instruction and responsibilities by an aide.
The school day for K4 is 8:10 a.m. until 12:00 p.m., five days
a week. The K5 program is a full day program with the school day
beginning at 8:10 a.m. and ending at 2:30 p.m.
We
strive for our GWA kindergarten to be a stimulating and exciting
place to learn. Although it is a structured environment, time
is allocated for free play, learning centers, creative art work,
and story telling on a daily basis. The children learn to interact
with their peers and adults. George Walton Academy strives to
develop happy, secure, well adjusted preschoolers. We work toward
developing strong work habits and listening skills. As the academic
development of each child proceeds at a different rate, the preschool
program is designed to present academic instruction when the child
is ready. Our academic school skills are introduced and reinforced
through workbook activities, oral drills, learning games, and
unit activities in reading, social studies and science. We use
a hands on approach in both science and math. By using games,
objects, and experiments, the children learn new skills and reinforce
them by "doing" rather than by simply listening.
The
preschool curriculum is enhanced by weekly music, art, computer
and library periods with additional instructors in various school
buildings. In addition, kindergarten students are instructed in
the use of computers. Field trips to the Fire Station, Pumpkin
Patch, Zoo and Puppet Show are examples of outside learning experiences
that enhance and broaden classroom learning.
